Herman Melville, born on August 1, 1819, became one of America's greatest authors by drawing upon his adventurous life at sea and his deep knowledge of the Bible. His novel Moby-Dick tells the story of Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the great white whale while weaving together numerous biblical themes and symbols through characters such as Ishmael and Ahab. Although the novel received little recognition during Melville's lifetime, it is now considered an American literary masterpiece.
