On July 25, 1847, just one day after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, Brigham Young instructed the Latter-day Saint pioneers to make Sabbath worship a priority despite the many demands of settling a new homeland. He taught that setting aside one day each week for worship, rest, and partaking of the sacrament would bring greater spiritual strength and even temporal blessings than working without pause. As the pioneers established their new community, they centered it around the future temple and sought to build both their city and their faith upon gospel principles. Brigham Young's teachings continue to remind members today that honoring the Sabbath invites peace, renews covenants, strengthens faith, and helps keep our focus on Jesus Christ amid the responsibilities of daily life.
