The first Indianapolis 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race was held on May 30, 1911, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Created by automobile dealer Carl Fisher, the speedway was originally designed as a testing facility for new automobiles. The race quickly became one of the most famous and prestigious sporting events in the world. Early driver Ray Harroun won the inaugural race driving the Marmon Wasp, the first race car equipped with a rearview mirror. Over the years, the Indy 500 became known for innovation, speed, and engineering excellence. Today, the speedway is the world’s largest sports venue and hosts hundreds of thousands of spectators each year.
