On February 17, 1801, the U.S. House of Representatives ended a weeklong deadlock and elected Thomas Jefferson as President after he and Aaron Burr tied in the Electoral College during the fiercely divided election of 1800. After 36 ballots, key Federalists abstained, allowing Jefferson to win a majority of states and marking what he later called the “Revolution of 1800,” a peaceful transfer of power that helped secure the young republic’s future. Despite deep political conflict, Jefferson and John Adams eventually renewed their friendship, reminding us of the importance of unity, forgiveness, and loving others even amid strong disagreements.
