Electric vehicles are accelerating a tyre waste crisis across the UK, with EV tyres wearing out up to 50 percent faster than conventional tyres due to battery weight and instant torque delivery. Northern Ireland manufacturer Gradeall International Ltd is addressing the challenge with PAS 108 compliant tyre baling technology designed to help recycling operators manage rising volumes of end-of-life EV tyres.
- EV tyres wear out significantly faster than conventional tyres, with first replacements needed around 18,000 miles compared to 24,335 miles for petrol and diesel vehicles, a gap of over 6,000 miles per set.
- The primary causes of accelerated EV tyre wear are battery weight adding 300 to 500 kilograms of extra load, instant torque delivery from electric motors, and friction generated by regenerative braking systems.
