The opening chapter of Smoke in the Kitchen introduces Sara Moses in Freetown, Sierra Leone, in February 1983. At forty-three, Sara is no stranger to hardship. She carries within her a deep well of fortitude, built from years of overcoming personal loss and family conflict.

We meet her in a moment of tension, walking away from her modern, fully equipped indoor kitchen to the outdoor firewood kitchen she treasures.
