In our debut case, we examine the death of Joseph Smedley — a case where the official ruling of suicide sits uneasily against a state police database entry classifying it as an unsolved homicide. We trace Joseph's disappearance, the strange messages that preceded it, the discovery of his body at Griffey Lake, and the coroner's determination that followed. From there we look at the family's pushback, their push for an independent forensic review, and the evidentiary limits investigators faced. Along the way we ask the hard questions: what still doesn't add up, and why does the state's own database contradict the original ruling? We close with a remembrance of Joseph and a call for respectful discussion of a case that remains, in many ways, unresolved.
