Kenzo Shibata, currently studying to be a social worker, recalls repeated attempts to recruit him into the "pee wee" version of the Latin Kings when an older member asks him to steal a bike. Fearful, young Kenzo declines the invitation, unlike other classmates, one of whom is killed before graduating from high school. Kenzo reflects on his younger days, and has used his experiences to empathize with many of the young people he teaches today, some of whom are in gangs or members of crews.
