In the early hours of February 4, 1880, a vigilante mob of more than thirty neighbours descended on a farmhouse along Roman Line near Lucan, Ontario, murdering five members of the Donnelly family. Despite a surviving eyewitness—a young boy hiding beneath a bed—no one was ever convicted.
This week, Mackenzie takes the host chair to walk Sarah through the true story of the Black Donnellys: from their beginnings in Tipperary, Ireland, to the bitter feuds that followed them across the Atlantic, the infamous Roman Line massacre, the failed trials, the hauntings that continue to this day, and the question that still divides historians over a century later:
