Born in Dallas in 1968, he is the son of Doyle Bramhall Sr., a songwriter and drummer who played with Lightnin' Hopkins and Freddie King and was a lifelong collaborator of childhood friends Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan. By eighteen he was touring with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and soon after he co-founded the Arc Angels with Charlie Sexton, backed by Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm section of Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon.
