In 40 AD, the Han governor Su Ding executed the local lord Thi Sach without trial, a calculated terror tactic meant to break the independence of the Lac aristocracy in the commandery of Jiaozhi. It did the opposite. Within the same month, Thi Sach's widow Trung Trac and her sister Trung Nhi turned that grief into a rebellion that swept the Red River Delta, sent the governor fleeing his post, and captured 65 towns and strongholds. Trung Trac was proclaimed ruling queen, the first female monarch in Vietnamese history. The speed alone tells you something the chronicles do not: an armed elite with wealth, soldiers, and communication networks was already primed, waiting for a catalyst and a leader.
