Houston was the only person elected governor of two different states, served as president of an independent nation, became a U.S. senator, and spent years living as an adopted member of the Cherokee Nation. Born in Virginia in 1793 and raised near Maryville, Tennessee, Houston rejected the rigid frontier life expected of him and ran away at sixteen to live with the Cherokee under Chief John Jolly. There he learned the language, adopted Cherokee customs, received the name Raven, and absorbed lessons in patience, strategic retreat, and unconventional warfare that would later shape his military career.
