Imagine a Venn diagram where hardcore theoretical physics, international law, and high-ranking Islamic theology overlap. In this episode of pplpod, we conduct a structural archaeology of the life of Hassan Shariatmadari, a prominent exile who represents the "road not taken" for the Iranian Revolution. The son of a Grand Ayatollah, Shariatmadari transitioned from the seminary to the "MIT of Iran," applying the systems-thinking of a physicist to the governance of a nation. We deconstruct his historic opposition to Velayat-e Faqih—the absolute political rule of a cleric—and the violent crushing of his party, the NPRP, in 1979. From his base in Germany, he has spent over 40 years professionalizing the opposition through the Iran Transition Council, advocating for a
