"The Loss of the Birkenhead" by Francis Hastings Doyle is a largely unknown (at least in America) but incredibly potent poem for dads. We are called to endure hardship as we provide for and protect those who have been entrusted to us by God. This happens for some men, such as the sailors and soldiers on The Birkenhead, in great life-altering moments. But most of us need to look to the day-to-day hardships we can endure for those we love and take them on gladly as the Lord uses such moments to shape our souls.
