The Bell Witch is a famous American folk legend centered on the Red River area in early 19th-century Tennessee. The legend tells of a family—the Bells—who were allegedly haunted by a mysterious entity between 1817 and 1821. The spirit became known as the “Bell Witch.” The family patriarch, John Bell, and his daughter Betsy Bell were the main targets. The entity could speak, shape-shift, and physically interact with people—scratching, hitting, and pulling covers off beds.
