In this talk, Dr. Bouxsein clarifies how the study has revolutionized bone medication development by changing its core definition. Instead of undergoing lengthy trials to prove they prevent fractures, new medications can now be approved based on improved bone mineral density (BMD). By establishing BMD as the FDA’s first surrogate endpoint for osteoporosis, this historic shift has dramatically accelerated drug development, unlocked new funding, and already triggered a wave of new lab openings and FDA submissions.
