Breadcrumbs from Heaven (Matthew 15:21-28)
Message from Samuel Baumer on Matthew 15:21-28 titled Breadcrumbs from Heaven, which preceded small group discussions at Manhattan Covenant Church's gathering on August 16, 2026 in Manhattan, KS. You can learn more at mhkcovenant.org. Questions discussed: Jesus refers to the people of Israel as "lost sheep" and "children" while referring to gentiles such as the Canaanite woman as "dogs." This seems uncharacteristic of Jesus to many of us. What do you make of this? The Canaanite woman confesses Jesus as Lord three times when asked for his help. How is this compare with Jesus' reception amongst the nation of Israel? In the story, Jesus' disciples tell Jesus to send the woman away because of her shouting as she cries out for mercy on her child. Are there any people or groups of people whose cries for mercy we have mistaken as disruptions to be told off? Are there people we have written off as unworthy of mercy? Ultimately, despite being a gentile and a woman, Jesus praises her faith and heals the woman's child. Can you think of a time when Jesus responded to your faith with mercy? What is something practical from the text that we can apply to how we live out our Christian walk? Perhaps this this affects how we relate to those who are different than us or what we expect of God's generosity in our lives.
