Has God left any room for men to add new rules of life or new forms of worship? In these sections Calvin insists that the Lord has already given a perfect rule in his law, leaving nothing for human invention to supply. God alone is Lawgiver, Judge, and King of the soul; to transfer that honour to man is to invade the kingdom of Christ. Human constitutions that claim a place in the true worship of God, or that bind the conscience as necessary for salvation, are therefore impious.
