The Circle of Belonging: Where Our Pain Heals with Dr. Chasity Brimeyer
How do we make a difference for those in pain? In this episode of Humankindness at Work, Jennifer has a conversation with her childhood best friend, Dr. Chasity Brimeyer, a pediatric psychologist specializing in chronic pain. Chasity shares a principle she learned from Father Gregory Boyle that shapes how she shows up for others, both professionally and personally: “We all belong to each other, no exceptions.” This conversation goes beyond her clinical work to explore the universal experience of pain, and how we can ease each other’s burdens. In this conversation, you’ll hear these takeaways: → Pain, whether physical or emotional, is often invisible, which makes it easy to overlook in the people around us. → Supporting someone doesn't require expertise. It requires patience, presence, and a willingness to show up even when you don't know what to say. → Small, consistent gestures - a message, a lunch invitation, simply noticing someone's absence - can make the difference between someone feeling isolated and feeling seen. → Building a culture where everyone feels like they belong starts with individuals deciding no one gets left outside the circle. You don't have to be a healthcare professional to make a real difference in someone else’s pain. What’s one thing you’ll do this week? More Than a Mortgage: How Trinity Habitat for Humanity Builds Stability | Gage Yager
Where do you want to be when the world feels heavy? Home. It's a physical and emotional refuge - a place of stability that so many of us take for granted. In this episode, host Jennifer Clark talks with Gage Yager, CEO and Executive Director of Trinity Habitat for Humanity in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Over the past 30 years, Trinity Habitat has helped more than 800 families become homeowners and ranks in the top 10 of more than 1,200 Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide. Gage shares his unlikely path from commercial real estate broker to nonprofit leader, and unpacks Trinity Habitat's "hand up, not a handout" philosophy: a partnership model where families help build their own homes, complete financial literacy training, and take on mortgages they're equipped to manage. The result? A foreclosure rate of just 2.5% since 1989, and a track record of families who go on to earn college degrees, build careers, and reinvest in their communities. Along the way, Gage tells the deeply human stories behind the mission. Like a mother who fled domestic violence and rebuilt her life after living in her car, and a man who survived political upheaval and imprisonment abroad and found a fresh start in a Habitat home. These stories are a powerful reminder that stability isn't just about a house. It's about giving people the foundation to write their next chapter. In this episode, you'll hear about: How Trinity Habitat's "hand up, not a handout" model works The ripple effects of homeownership on families, schools, and neighborhoods Real stories of resilience from Trinity Habitat homeowners How financial literacy training sets families up for long-term success Ways to get involved with your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate 🏠 Learn more or get involved: [https://www.trinityhabitat.org] Find your local Habitat For Humanity: [https://www.habitat.org/] HOST AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: Jennifer Clark Humankindness at Work Podcast website ➡️ FOLLOW THE PODCAST ON SOCIALS! Far From Home on July 4th: How Humankindness Changes Our Perspective with Host Jennifer Clark
What does it look like to practice kindness when you're in desperate need of it? In this solo episode of Humankindness at Work, host Jennifer Clark shares a personal story from the summer of 2003 - a July 4th spent thousands of miles from home in Bamako, Mali. Recovering from a serious illness and struggling with homesickness, Jennifer made a choice: instead of focusing on herself, she would extend kindness to the people around her. What followed was an unexpected and beautiful exchange - and a lesson she still carries with her. In this episode, you'll discover: How one simple act of kindness shifted Jennifer's perspective during one of her lowest moments What her host families in Mali taught her about seeing, celebrating, and caring for others A practical challenge to help you make a difference this week right where you are Why humankindness benefits both the giver and the receiver Key Takeaway: Making a difference doesn't have to be complicated. Kindness starts with lifting your eyes off your own problems long enough to see the people around you. This week's challenge: Find one person and take a genuine interest in them. You don't have to cross an ocean to make someone feel seen. Humankindness at Work is the podcast where real people share real stories of making a difference in their corner of the world. Shiny Gems: Equipping Kids to Create and Consume Media with Purpose | Daniel Badi Rinaldi
What if your child created and consumed media that shaped their character? In this episode of Humankindness at Work, you’ll meet Daniel Badi Rinaldi, a professional media producer and the founder and executive director of Shiny Gems, a media education organization helping students in grades four through eight navigate their digital lives with wisdom, creativity, and integrity. Daniel's grandparents worked on beloved Disney films during the golden age like Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Dumbo. Growing up surrounded by storytelling, Daniel developed a deep love for media from an early age. Alongside that came another influence: his mother, who facilitated a virtues-based character development program in the neighborhoods of Cali, Colombia - teaching children values like kindness, generosity, patience, and humility. Decades later, Daniel brought both worlds together. After a career spanning PBS Kids, NPR, iHeart Radio, documentary production, journalism, and podcasting, he founded Shiny Gems — a curriculum now reaching classrooms across the United States and Canada. Shiny Gems uses media itself to teach media literacy and digital citizenship, weaving virtues into every module. Students learn practical skills that help them become active, thoughtful participants in their digital lives rather than passive consumers. In this conversation, Daniel shares: How childhood media experiences shape identity and imagination, and why that matters for the content kids consume today What "better content" really means, and why it isn't about producing feel-good fluff How virtues like moderation, patience, and generosity apply directly to digital citizenship Why even posting a photo or an emoji is a creative act, and an opportunity to reflect your values A simple, powerful question every parent and educator can ask to spark media literacy at home Daniel's hopeful vision for a society built on trust, purposeful storytelling, and communities that look out for one another Whether you're a parent trying to guide your child through the noise of screens and social media, an educator looking for character-based curriculum tools, or someone who simply believes that the stories we tell matter - this episode will leave you inspired and equipped to make a difference in your corner of the digital world. 🌟 Shiny Gems is currently in one of its pilot phases, and the pilot modules are available at no charge. First to the Frontlines: How World Central Kitchen Serves Hope in Crisis - with Linda Roth
When disaster strikes, hunger doesn’t wait. In this episode of Humankindness at Work, you’ll meet Linda Roth - Emmy award-winning journalist and Chief of Communications & Strategy at World Central Kitchen - who shares how food becomes a lifeline, a symbol of hope, and a vehicle for community resilience in the face of crisis. World Central Kitchen has served over 600 million meals in more than 50 countries. They show up within 24 hours of a crisis - through hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, and war. What makes them different? They cook the food people actually grew up eating. Because when everything is gone, a taste of home feels like hope. Linda put it beautifully: "We don't ask what religion you are, what political bent you have. We don't ask any questions. All we ask is, “How many meals do you need?" After the LA wildfires, donors told them: "I've been giving to you for years, but I never thought I'd need you." None of us do. That's exactly why this work matters. 🎧 Listen to the full episode and find out how YOU can get involved, even from your own kitchen table. 🌍 LEARN MORE ABOUT WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN HOST AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: Jennifer Clark Humankindness at Work Podcast website ➡️ FOLLOW THE PODCAST ON SOCIALS! From Surviving to Supported: One Mom's Mission to Change Parental Mental Health with Vanessa Rio
When Vanessa Rio became a mom, she expected the hard parts. She didn't expect to feel so completely alone. No sleep. Little support. And a healthcare system that told her what she was feeling was "normal" - and to just enjoy every moment. Sound familiar? Instead of accepting this normalcy, Vanessa did something remarkable: she built the support system she needed, and then opened it up to parents everywhere. She founded Mothering Minds - the United Kingdom's first platform offering online therapy and support groups for new and expectant parents. And then? She picked up her family and moved off-grid to the Philippines in search of the village of support she'd always wanted. In this episode of the Humankindness at Work Podcast, Vanessa shares about: ✨ The mental health crisis hiding inside new parenthood ✨ Why modern society has "de-centered" the mother ✨ How to build your own village, even in an individualistic culture ✨ Simple ways all of us can show up for the parents in our lives LEARN MORE ABOUT MOTHERING MINDS HOST AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: Jennifer Clark Humankindness at Work Podcast website ➡️ FOLLOW THE PODCAST ON SOCIALS! How long could you go without a shower? A week? Three months? For thousands of people experiencing homelessness and hygiene insecurity across Oklahoma, it's not a hypothetical - it's everyday life.
