The Pirot people played an exceptionally important role in the First Serbian Uprising, offering decisive resistance to Ottoman oppression in the Ponišavlje region as a vital strategic hub. As early as 1805, the local population rose in rebellions which, despite harsh Turkish reprisals, initiated mass migrations toward the liberated parts of Serbia. During military operations, local leaders such as Voivode Mita and Marinko led elite volunteer units and successfully defended the southern front.
