As a Harvard graduate in the early 1970s, George worked as a substance abuse counselor and attended classes at Florida State University. Following a cervical injury and concussion playing rugby in 1975, George was introduced to massage therapy, and began massage therapy training. By 1978, he was a member of the charter class of the SOMA Institute of Neuromuscular Integration and quickly became an assistant instructor in Somassage.
