#99 ✶ River nymphs, headless horsemen and giants

In this episode I read accounts of strange supernatural encounters from Reddit. These stories are from a variety of cultures and geographic locations, and spring forth a treasure trove of fascinating folklore. In between stories I read comments that share additional anecdotes, and expand on the folklore found in these tales. We’re talking giants, elves, witches, spectral horsemen, nymphs, and more… These stories and legends come from Albania, Greece, Indonesia, El Salvador, Pakistan, Slovenia, Nicaragua–the list goes on…

‘Fairies’ of the Philippines and their futuristic hidden city – Engkanto and Biringan

In this video I will be talking extensively about Biringan City, a legendary city said to be invisible to humans and populated by engkanto, beings that are very similar to fairies in Celtic folklore. Biringan is said to be hidden somewhere within the forests and mountains of Samar, an ultramodern (even futuristic) city, where buildings, clothing, and food is black. You can happen upon it by accident, glimpse it in the shifting sea-mists, or perhaps be ‘invited’ by an engkanto who has fallen in love with you. The engkanto are said to look mostly human, except that they are extremely beautiful and lacking a philtrum. But to court them is to invite danger. You could go mad, fall ill, or disappear–wandering into the forest never to be seen again. I will be reading information and personal accounts from essays and different online material such as Reddit, the USC Folklore archives, and Liminal Earth. In this episode I’ll be reading experiences and comments on Reddit about people remembering seeing a green hand as a child. The similarities in the stories and the way this idea or memory resonated with so many people fascinated me, and I felt compelled to make this episode. Tonight I’ll be reading stories from Reddit where people claimed to have seen Santa Claus. We all know that Santa isn’t real, so what are people experiencing? Is it simply childhood imagination, or something stranger? I’ll also read a couple of encounters from the Fairy Census where people recount seeing fairies dancing around their Christmas presents as children.
