Ethiopiaid's partner, The Atsede Clinic, lies in Gurage in the rural south-west of Ethiopia. Led by midwife Atsede, a local midwife with over a decade of experience who is dedicated to the women of Cheha woreda. Atsede is a much-loved and well-respected member of the community, with women walking for hours to see her. After working for 2 years in the local health centre, Atsede partnered with Indie, a classically trained anthropologist and a clinically trained midwife from the UK. Graduating from the University of Cambridge, she spent time working in Kyrgyzstan with UNICEF’s Maternal and Neonatal Health Team before returning to the UK to complete her midwifery training. Together, sharing experience and expertise, they work to run their own woman focused, community based clinic where women are given consistency, home visits, compassion and the freedom of choice.
In our second ever episode, we discuss how and why Ethiopiaid have chosen to step-up and run an emergency appeal for the current situation in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia. In this episode, Anna Lord Ethiopiaid's Senior Partnerships Manager, talks with development professional and one of Ethiopiaid's Trustees Helen Horn about why, as a development organisation committed to long-term sustainable solutions to poverty, Ethiopiaid have chosen to respond to this humanitarian crisis.
In this first ever episode, Ethiopiaid's CEO talks to Valerie Browning. Valerie has spent the last 30 years working and living as one of Ethiopia's Afar pastoralists. Having travelled to the remote region as a young student nurse, Valerie explains how she fell in love with the region, the people and has dedicated her life to this complex, creative and sadly marginalised community. Now in her 60's Valerie, who is married a local Afari man, pledges to never stop working for and with the Afar people.
