In January 1925, a deadly diphtheria outbreak threatened Nome, Alaska. The town was isolated by brutal winter conditions, and the medicine needed to stop the outbreak was hundreds of miles away in Nenana. With normal transportation unavailable, officials turned to a relay of sled dogs and mushers to carry the lifesaving diphtheria antitoxin across the frozen Alaskan wilderness.

What followed became known as the Great Race of Mercy. Twenty dog teams covered roughly 674 miles in only about five and a half days while facing blizzards, whiteout conditions, gale-force winds, and temperatures that plunged far below zero. Togo and Leonhard Seppala handled one of the longest and most dangerous sections, while Gunnar Kaasen and Balto completed the final stretch into Nome.
