In Chapters 28–31 of Wuthering Heights, young Cathy escapes long enough to reach her dying father, Edgar, before his death. But Heathcliff’s plan has already succeeded: because of her forced marriage to Linton, Cathy’s inheritance is vulnerable. Linton dies soon afterward, and Heathcliff gains control over Thrushcross Grange as well as Wuthering Heights.
