In Chapters 1–4 of Wuthering Heights, Mr. Lockwood arrives in the isolated Yorkshire countryside as Heathcliff’s tenant at Thrushcross Grange. Curious about his landlord, he visits Wuthering Heights and immediately notices the rough weather, harsh setting, and tense household. Heathcliff is cold and suspicious, the people around him seem hostile and unhappy, and Lockwood cannot easily understand how they are all connected.
