But long before outside help fully arrives, one of the most important resources already exists inside every neighborhood: prepared neighbors. Manatee County Commissioner Mike Rahn along with CERT leaders Steve Litschauer and Sharon Denson and Public Safety Director Jodie Fiske join us to talk about the Community Emergency Response Team, better known as CERT, and why community preparedness matters more than ever. We explore what CERT actually is, how the program began through FEMA, the role trained volunteers play during disasters, and why CERT members are not first responders, but an essential support system for their communities. Leaving it better than you found it sounds simple, but in local government it takes discipline, patience, and the willingness to make difficult decisions. In this episode Deputy County Administrator Courtney De Pol shares the leadership lessons she’s taking with her as she transitions from local government and the work that goes into guiding a complex public organization through growth, crisis, and change. During her time with Manatee County, Courtney led some of the County’s most critical areas, including Public Safety, Development Services, Community and Veterans Services, Human Resources, and Government Relations. Chairman Siddique represents District 3 in Manatee County, Florida, including Bradenton, Anna Maria Island, Cortez, and surrounding coastal communities. Elected in 2024 and now serving as Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, he shares what it was like going from a first-year commissioner to now leading the entire board, and what residents may not know about some of the major issues pressing today. From helping veterans access the benefits they’ve earned, to supporting families in crisis, caring for animals in need, and creating pathways to housing and recovery, Manatee County’s Community & Veterans Services Department plays a vital role in strengthening the fabric of our community. We begin with Veteran Services and the work being done to help former service members navigate the often complicated VA benefits system. Our conversation also highlights Manatee Moves, a program that has already provided more than 1,000 free rides to local veterans, helping them reach medical appointments, services, and support they may otherwise struggle to access. We then turn to affordable housing and community development, discussing how partnerships with nonprofit and public organizations are helping address one of the most pressing challenges facing our growing county.
