Augmented Reality-Assisted Surgery for Craniofacial Fibrous Dysplasia
New episode of About the Face! - Connecting you to the latest research in Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine In this episode, Dr. Alexandra Berges speaks with Dr. David Chou about his article, “Augmented Reality-Assisted Surgery for Craniofacial Fibrous Dysplasia.” We discuss how augmented reality and the Microsoft HoloLens 2 were used to project a mirrored craniofacial template directly onto the patient during surgery—helping guide exposure, identify critical landmarks, and assess bony reduction without an external optical tracking system. Dr. Chou also shares the technology’s current limitations, including perspective shift and reduced tracking accuracy from different positions around the operating table, and where AR-assisted craniofacial surgery may be headed next. Listen wherever you get your podcasts, and read the full article.
Effect of an Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Protocol in Postoperative Pain and Opioid Consumption after Rhinoplasty
Effect of an Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Protocol in Postoperative Pain and Opioid Consumption after Rhinoplasty The About the Face Podcast: Connecting you to the latest research in Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine. In this episode, Dr. Samuel Oyer discusses the role of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols in postoperative pain management following rhinoplasty. Dr. Oyer discusses his team’s study comparing traditional opioid-based pain management with a standardized multimodal ERAS pathway after open septorhinoplasty. The ERAS protocol—incorporating tramadol, celecoxib, prednisone, and acetaminophen—was associated with significantly lower patient-reported pain during the first postoperative week without increased opioid consumption. We discuss practical strategies for multimodal pain control, opportunities to reduce reliance on stronger opioids after rhinoplasty, and how standardized postoperative protocols may improve the patient recovery experience.
