Altmann was born and raised in Jasina, Czechoslovakia, a small town in the Carpathian mountains (now Yasinya, Ukraine). She survived Auschwitz, labor camps, and a death march to the Bergen Belsen concentration camp. We reached Altmann by phone at her home in Stamford, CT.
