News of Lazarus raised from the dead reaches the Pharisees, who go to the chief priests, and from that day the plan to kill Jesus is set — so he withdraws with his disciples to a town called Ephraim. Six days before the Passover, at a dinner in Bethany, Mary anoints Jesus' feet with a pound of expensive ointment, an act Judas complains is wasteful. On the road up to Jerusalem, Jesus takes the twelve aside and tells them plainly what awaits him there, then restores sight to a blind beggar named Bartimaeus and calls a tax collector named Zacchaeus down from a sycamore tree. Because the crowd supposes the kingdom will appear the moment Jesus reaches the city, he tells a parable about a nobleman's servants entrusted with money while he's away. The next day, both Luke and John record the same scene: Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey's colt as the crowd spreads palm branches and shouts Hosanna. Seeing the city, he weeps over it, then clears the temple courts a second time.
