Because Vodou is rooted in bloodline, memory, service, and reciprocal obligation to the lwa and the dead, any rite that authorizes spiritual power outside these foundations risks transforming Vodou from a lineage-based tradition into a credentialed religious institution. By examining the meaning of Asogwe, the role of the ason, the paradox of external initiation, and the commercialization of priestly status, this essay contends that the rite exposes a rupture between inherited spiritual authority and externally conferred ritual legitimacy.
