Professor Shams is the assistant professor of sociology at University of Pennsylvania, and serves as part of the core faculty in University of Pennsylvania’s Asian American Studies Program. In 2020, she wrote the book “Here, There, and Elsewhere,” which challenges the perception that immigrants’ lives are shaped exclusively by the country the emigrated from and immigrated to and she is currently working on a new project about the intertwining of romance and religion for South Asian Muslim Immigrants in Canada.
