#56 The Like Is the Sound of You Handing Over Your Power

We finish a task — a letter, a thought, a piece of work — and for a brief moment there is a sense of quiet completeness. The mind, which had been strained by the effort, relaxes. But then, almost without our consent, a new urge arises: to see if anyone noticed. We check the feed, the notifications, the numbers. We know, if we are honest with ourselves, that the original completeness was enough. It was real. Yet we cannot resist the pull to have it confirmed from outside. Why? Because the first completion is a stillness, and stillness is uncomfortable for the restless seeking. It seeks a new disturbance. The confirmation — or the lack of it — provides that disturbance. The satisfaction of having done something is quickly replaced by the uncertainty of whether it was seen. And thus we are never truly complete with anything. We move from the quiet of finishing to the noise of seeking, and we call that progress. But the quiet moment was the real achievement. The seeking is just a habit of a mind that does not know how to rest. To see this is to take the first step toward a different kind of satisfaction — one that does not depend on the eyes of others.

#55 The Algorithm Wants You to Be a Noun. Be a Verb Instead.

It is curious how eagerly we settle into a fixed identity. As though the moment we name ourselves — I am this kind of person, this profession, this worldview — we have finally escaped the anxiety of becoming. But what we have actually done is drawn a fence around a wilderness. Every label is a promise to the future that we will remain legible. We will stay inside the shape we have drawn. And yet, almost immediately, the shape begins to feel small. The discomfort that follows is not a flaw in our character. It is the wilderness pushing against the fence. The one who no longer feels this pressure has simply forgotten the fence is there. They have confused the prison of self-description with safety. And that is a peace worth fearing.

#54 The Total Transparency You Seek Is the New Pornography of the Soul

You told them everything. Every wound, every shame, every reason you are the way you are. And now you sit across from each other, nothing left to say, wondering why you feel so far apart. You mistook exposure for intimacy. You thought the more you showed, the closer you would become, but you only made yourself consumable. Now you are finished, and finished things are left behind. Real closeness requires that something remain undiscovered. Not as a trick, but because a living person is not a book to be read in one sitting. The one who gives too much too soon is not honest. They are already gone.

#53 You Cannot Build a Life From What Is Designed to Be Replaced

Notice how quickly you tire of a new device. The anticipation is sharp, the first days a quiet delight — then the novelty fades, and within weeks it sits beside you as unremarkable as a spoon. But a spoon does not promise excitement. It simply works. A device, on the other hand, is designed to remind you of its own inadequacy. The moment it stops being new, you begin to feel the faint pull toward the next model. An old, well-worn object offers the opposite. It makes no promises. It only deepens. The grain of the wood, the softened leather — these are not signs of decline. They are the slow accumulation of use, of time passing without demand. Such a thing asks nothing of you except that you keep using it. And that is why, unlike the thing that promised everything, it never disappoints.

#52 What You Use to Fill the Void Is What Makes It Deeper

Observe yourself next time you are waiting. At a traffic light. For a page to load. The moment before sleep. That thin space between doing things. Most people cannot bear it. They reach for a phone, a thought, a plan. They fill the gap because the gap is where the unease lives. The unease is not a problem to solve — it is the raw feeling of existence without a frame. Rituals were never about gods or ancestors. They were about this gap. They gave the unease a shape — a place to sit, a time to be felt, a way to move through. When we discard the shape, we do not eliminate the unease. We just rob it of its container. Now it leaks into everything. You cannot buy a new container. You can only notice that you need one. And that noticing, even for a moment, is the beginning of relief.
