Watch a person who spends hours each day curating their public image. They are driven by a craving — not for connection, but for the temporary relief of being seen. They believe that once enough people recognize the mask, the self behind it will finally feel solid.
But the craving is bottomless. Each satisfied glance only sharpens the next hunger. The persona becomes a cage; the more it is admired, the more its keeper must maintain it. And underneath, the original self grows smaller, quieter, until it is barely there.
The tragedy is not that the mask falls. The tragedy is that so many mistake the mask for the face.
