The beginning of Johann Hoch's American career, beginning with a marriage and murder in West Virginia, a faked death that fooled no one, and another murder in Chicago.
One year into his American sojourn, Hoch had married and murdered two women. But the next he tried to swindle was also trying to swindle him - and may have been a murderer herself.
Having recovered his confidence, Hoch goes west, then heads to Cincinnati for his longest marriage yet - and the beginning of his biggest crime spree.
Having figured out that deserting was easier than killing, Hoch goes on a spree of quickie marriages across the nation. Plus, Adam talks about his own recent tomb snooping in New England.
After getting into a scrape over rented furniture, Hoch spends two years in jail. While he's there, stories of his crimes begin to hit the press, and he becomes a sensation for the first time.
Out of jail, Hoch attempts to swindle Liz Goerke, who encourages him to take up hypnosis. Which is not really a skill you want someone to have if they're trying to swindle you!
Humiliated by Liz Goerke, Hoch attempts a fresh start, maybe even a plan to go straight, in St. Louis, with a new marriage that lasts nearly a year.
Over the summer of 1903, Hoch attempts to catfish two Chicago women, one of whom will be his undoing.
