Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1881 after years of serving wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Known as the “Angel of the Battlefield,” Barton risked her life to deliver food, medical supplies, and comfort to Union soldiers near the front lines of battle. After the war, she helped locate missing soldiers and identify thousands of graves. Inspired by the International Red Cross while visiting Europe, Barton later organized the American Red Cross to provide disaster relief and humanitarian aid in the United States. Her lifelong service left a lasting legacy of compassion, courage, and care for those in need.
