Who approves your yes?
Not who should. Who actually does. When somebody asks for your Saturday, when one more thing lands on a plate that was already full, who signs off on that?
You probably cannot name the person, because it is not a person. It is a rotation. Whoever asked most recently, whoever sounded most urgent, whoever you would feel worst about disappointing. That is not a scheduling problem. That is a governance problem.
This is the first episode of Run It Like a CEO, and it starts where the season has to start. You are running a company whether or not you have admitted you own it. And the title you are already holding is not Chief Executive Officer. It is Chief Experience Officer. The person responsible for what it feels like to be in your space, on your team, in your meetings, in your house. Nobody hands that title out, and nobody ever gave you the job description.
In this episode:
Drawing the org chart of your life as it actually runs, not as you wish it ran. Who gets your best hours, who gets the leftovers, and who can interrupt you without an appointment.
The difference between the employee posture and the owner posture. An employee asks for permission. An owner asks what it costs. And why the thing you have been calling humility might be avoidance wearing humility's clothes.
Accepting the appointment, which is a decision you make while you are still scared, because that is the only time anybody makes it. And the story of arriving in Detroit at twenty six with a dual master's degree, a toddler, and no job. What changed was not that somebody finally chose me. What changed is that I stopped applying for my own life.
