Why We Left - Aarti and Snigdha on Emigrating

Not every emigration story is about opportunity. Not everyone leaves for the allure of 'opportunity', nor are they escaping an unbearable life back home. For most people, the reality lies somewhere in between. In this episode, Snigdha and Aarti share how they made the decision to leave India to embark on a European adventure, starting with a Master's degree in Denmark, and moving to Amsterdam for the second year of their studies. Five years after graduating, they are still here. They didn't move to the Netherlands chasing career opportunity. In fact, if they had stayed back home, they might have had more chances to grow. In the first episode of The Unlisted, I sit down with my friend Gulden, who moved from Kazakhstan to the Netherlands in search of a place where she might feel a greater sense of belonging. Since graduating, she has navigated visa deadlines, precarious employment, an employer who ghosted her, and seven jobs in five years. In the past five years, Gulden has faced many hardships but has also stayed very resilient and adapted to how she responds to uncertain periods of life. One important step was to stop tying her self-worth to her job. And community—specifically communal living—helped with that.
