The Imperial College London 2026 iGEM project, reGELerate, aims to overcome the limitations of conventional hydrogels when it comes to mechanical strength and enzyme immobilisation. Their goal is to shift from a synthetic, disordered polymer approach to utilising the self-repairing biological structural motifs of non-pathogenic fungal prions, ultimately engineering a superior biomaterial platform.

This year they are competing in the Foundational Advances iGEM Village, which hosts projects targeting bottlenecks in the field of synthetic biology itself. reGELerate is developing a wet and dry lab toolkit to parameterize and predict emergent material properties for hydrogel research.
