Fine Used to Be Free

Ten years ago, lashes were for weddings. Now they are on a six week recurring appointment. This week the briefing prices only the part of the routine that used to be extra, finds it costs around two thirds of what a woman spent on her entire appearance in 2017, and rules on the first longevity lip serum, which is also the only one. Plus a cell in Switzerland that has been made tired on purpose.

Your Face Is Now a Data Set

Beauty spent a decade asking us to trust the science. The science has now obtained human skin. This week the briefing covers a platform that keeps donated human tissue alive for four weeks, ten terabytes of proprietary biology, seven hundred and fifty million compounds a year screened by machine, and Lady Gaga as a cofounder. Also, a five hundred and ninety-nine dollar shower filter with a light in it.

Your Skin Has Been Rezoned

Skincare has officially expanded below the jawline. This week, The Maintenance Report looks at the rise of body serums, neck treatments, elbow creams, and the industry-wide “skinification” of everything that used to get by with lotion. There is a $338 body serum developed from technology tied to cardiac regenerative medicine. There are face-care ingredients for your arms. There are now dedicated categories for the neck, chest, hands, knees, and elbows. The science is real. The products may work. The interesting part is how quickly the rest of your body became a market. Your skin was always one organ. It has just been rezoned.

Your Face Has Entered Strategic Planning

What happens when aging stops being something you respond to and becomes something you’re expected to manage in advance? This week, The Maintenance Report looks at prejuvenation, collagen banking, preventative treatments, and the growing idea that your face needs a long-term plan. The question is not whether maintenance works. It’s when maintenance starts turning your future face into a project.

The Hotspan: When Looking Good Becomes a Performance Metric

What happens when attractiveness gets turned into a lifespan metric? This week, The Maintenance Report looks at the rise of the “hotspan,” the idea that beauty, relevance, and cultural currency can all be extended with enough maintenance. From tiny handbags to Botox to the increasingly complicated job of looking current, the question is not whether women want to look good. It’s what happens when that preference becomes a performance plan.

The Anti-Aging Industry Would Also Like You to Look Like Yourself

Anti-aging has been discontinued, again. The industry has stopped promising younger and started promising you. This week the briefing covers the undetectable era and the first promise in beauty history that cannot be broken, the desk issues its first approval on record, and an old photograph files a correction. The manners improved. The invoice did not.

The Personality Maintenance Industrial Complex

Your meditation app is disappointed in you. This week the briefing covers the business of calm, serenity scoreboards and streaks, the cortisol face claim, and a two line text that took nineteen minutes to send. Rest is not a performance metric.

Sleepmaxxing, Mouth Tape, Morning Sheds, and the Business of Sleeping Pretty

Sleep now comes with a score, a protocol, and several things taped to your face. This week, The Maintenance Report examines sleepmaxxing, the anxiety it created, the jawline promises behind mouth tape, and the increasingly elaborate ritual of the morning shed. Self-maintenance is one thing. Restructuring yourself like a troubled company is another.

Amazing for Her Age

A magazine described a fifty-three-year-old actress as looking “amazing for her age.” Three words in that compliment are load-bearing, and one of them is a countdown clock attached to a woman's face. Our lead story: the market's sudden rediscovery of women over forty, and why pro-aging campaigns keep selling anti-aging products with new adjectives. At the Claims Desk, one claim women were asked to believe this week, read verbatim and ruled on. Plus a dispatch from the host's own maintenance life, and one genuinely ridiculous item to close.
