The Birth of Lake Anna, the North Anna Power Station, and Setting the Record Straight, with Stewart Morris, Dominion Energy
In this episode of The Lake Anna Podcast, my guest is Stewart Morris, a senior official at Dominion Energy’s North Anna Power Station, based at Lake Anna, Virginia. Stewart is the Director of Safety and Licensing at the North Anna Power Station. Lake Anna would not exist but for the power station. As Stewart explains on this episode, Lake Anna (one of Virginia’s largest lakes) was specifically constructed in the late 1960s and early 1970s to support the operations of the North Anna Power Station, which now provides electricity to nearly 20% of the state of Virginia. Stewart — a brilliant yet personable Nuclear Engineer — is a walking encyclopedia for Lake Anna, because for 33 years he has worked at the North Anna Power Station. On this fascinating episode, we dive deep into the history of Lake Anna, how the lake was dug and filled, how the power station was constructed, why the water temperatures are different between the “warm” and “cold” sides of the lake, the underlying science behind the power station reactors, and how fantastically well the power station weathered the powerful earthquake of 2011. Importantly, Stewart also explains in great detail why Lake Anna is so very safe, mainly because the lake water does not go anywhere near the reactor containment facilities at power station.
