Departing from OMD’s usual melodic synth-pop sound, it showcases their willingness to experiment with darker and more abrasive textures. Throbbing Gristle – "Hot On Heels Of Love" From the influential 1979 album 20 Jazz Funk Greats, this track is a provocative exploration into industrial electronic music. Featuring pulsating synth sequences, whispered vocals by Cosey Fanni Tutti, and an unsettling sensuality, it's a pivotal work in the history of experimental electronic music. Rose Of Avalanche – "Velveteen" A gothic rock anthem from the Leeds-based band Rose of Avalanche, released in 1986. "Velveteen" is marked by lush guitars, moody atmospherics, and an emotional, resonant vocal performance. The track highlights the band's distinctive blend of psychedelic textures with gothic overtones. Shriekback – "This Big Hush" Featured on Shriekback's 1985 album Oil & Gold, this track is a hypnotic and introspective blend of art-rock and new wave influences. "This Big Hush" is known for its atmospheric depth, haunting melodies, and reflective lyrics. The song famously appeared in Michael Mann's 1986 thriller film Manhunter, enhancing its dark, cinematic legacy. Front 242 – “Headhunter” An iconic EBM anthem, “Headhunter” features aggressive beats and commanding vocals. Front 242's innovative use of sampling and electronic rhythms in this track solidified their status as pioneers in the industrial music scene.
