Day by day, hunger strips away the comforts and routine of civilized life. Horses were eaten first. Then dogs and cats. Rats became prized food. Snakes, vermin (mice & cockroaches) roots, berries and anything that might sustain life for another day is consumed. When even those were gone, some colonists boiled leather to soften it enough to chew.
