We often say, “I had a dream.”

But is the brain the only part of us that dreams?

In some dreams, we try to run but our body will not move. We try to scream but no sound comes out. We feel pressure on the chest, sudden heat or cold, pain, thirst, a racing heart—or an urgent need to find a bathroom.

Sometimes the body seems to enter the dream and become part of its story.

In this episode of The Dream Within, we explore the fascinating relationship between dreams and the body: how breathing, heartbeat, temperature, pain, fatigue, posture, hunger, and other bodily signals can become woven into our dream experiences.

We also look at interoception—our ability to sense what is happening inside the body—and ask why some physical sensations remain with us even after the dream has ended.

But there is an important boundary:

Not every physical sensation should be interpreted psychologically.

A dream about being unable to breathe may feel emotionally meaningful, but repeated nighttime breathing problems deserve attention in waking life too. Persistent pain, disrupted sleep, or other concerning physical symptoms should not be reduced to dream symbolism.

So instead of asking only:

“What does this dream mean?”

we can also ask:

“What was my body experiencing while I was dreaming—and what is it telling me now that I’m awake?”

Perhaps understanding a dream requires more than remembering its images.

Sometimes we also need to listen to the body that dreamed it.

The Dream Within explores dreams, emotions, relationships, the body, and the hidden patterns that shape our inner lives.

See it. Hold it. Repair. Grow again.
