Inflation forces expected to recede in 2022 with a final annual figure projected at under 2.5%

A need to raise interest rates in the United States, coming at a time when Thailand’s economy is short on liquidity with a record level of household debt, will be a key challenge in 2022 amid hopes that the kingdom may return to more significant economic growth this year. The economy received some good news on Friday when the Secretary-general of the Board of Investment revealed a 59% rise in inward foreign direct investment pledges for 2021. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/02/05/inflation-fears-expected-to-recede-in-2022/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.

Wealthy foreigners to own small landholdings associated with homes here agreed in principle

This important step is part of a wider programme to attract more foreigners to Thailand to live. However, the government is also determined that these new residents must have the ability to generate wealth and prosperity for the kingdom’s wider economy. The proposed legal provision has yet to be ratified by the cabinet and there are already signs that ministers are aware of the politically sensitive nature of the plan. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/02/01/wealthy-foreigners-to-own-small-landholdings/ Carla Boonkong reports from Bangkok.

Drugs showdown in the works bound to prompt memories of decisive 2003 crackdown by Thaksin

The speculation about who may lead a Pheu Thai government comes with the party doing well in opinion polls and after it unveiled a radical and comprehensive economic strategy last week in Bangkok. Positive opinion poll figures are being driven by the possible candidacy of Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra and the latest flag bearer for the Shinawatra political dynasty which, while generating enthusiasm among the party’s grassroots, also runs the risk of precipitating another army coup despite denials by military leaders this week. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/10/17/drugs-crackdown-planned-memories-of-thaksin-2003/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.
