Rights activist’s concern as the trial of Ferrari Joe begins in Bangkok for killing of a drugs suspect

The trial comes as a new law, strengthening legal protections against torture and human rights abuses against people held in custody with more transparency provisions, makes its way through Thailand’s parliament. The case of the suffocation of 24-year-old drug-dealing suspect, Jeerapong Thanapat, shocked Thailand to the core last August when a video clip emerged showing the police chief in Nakhon Sawan, currently facing trial on a capital murder charge, placed plastic bags over the victim’s head and fastened them while other police officers looked on at the main police station in the city. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/03/08/activist-anxious-over-ferrari-joe-police-torture-trial/ Carla Boonkong reports from Bangkok.

Fears for Thailand’s economy over Ukraine war with rising inflation rates and loss of confidence

Thai exporters say that shipments will be off by between $4 billion and $5 billion by the end of June. At the same time, the insecurity caused by the war will impact world travel and tourism as well as consumer confidence at home. This week, Mr Sanan Angubolkul, the Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce said he expects this war to last for some time bringing with it rising energy costs and disruption to world trade caused by economic sanctions. Thailand votes on the right side of history in UN deploring Russian military action in Ukraine

The vote came after heightened diplomatic representations by western ambassadors this week to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok and what is reported to be unprecedented diplomatic pressure from Washington throughout the world. It comes after public opinion in western countries has seen a dramatic shift since February 24th as a result of the plight of Ukraine and the country’s plucky opposition to Russian aggression. The move is also being carefully watched in the light of a rising and very real Chinese threat to Taiwan in a world that is increasingly divided between democracy and autocracy. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/03/03/thailand-votes-against-russia-on-ukraine/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.
