Thai Me too moment as top party leader to face sex charges as women come forward with reports

On Friday, one 30-year-old woman, Hathairat ‘Ann’ Thanakitamnuay, the wife of former Democrat Party turned street protester and political activist, Tanat Thanakitamnuay aka ‘Hi-so Luk Nat’, who lost an eye in recent street demonstrations in Bangkok, was accompanied by her husband. Ms Hathairat, who is running as a candidate for the Ruam Thai United Party, visited Lumpini Police Station and filed a complaint with police alleging that she was raped by the former Democrat Party deputy leader in February 2021 at an apartment in central Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area. Speaking to reporters, she said she was angered by the demeanour and denials coming from Mr Prinn this week after the first accusations emerged following a dinner date with an 18-year-old university student during which she claims she was a victim of sexual indecency and later harassment at the hands of the senior political figure. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/04/16/ex-party-leader-prinn-panitchpakdifaces-sex-charges-thailand-me-too-moment/ Carla Boonkong reports from Bangkok and Phetchaburi.

Minister proposes that vaccinated tourists fly in without notice from May 1st to boost the economy

Thailand’s foreign tourism industry is not expected to make a full recovery until 2026 according to Bank of Thailand Governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput as the Asia Pacific region lags behind the rest of the world in ramping up its travel industry from the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, 55% of air travellers in the region are from either North America or Europe with an even higher percentage of tourists. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/04/14/tourists-to-fly-in-without-notice-from-may/ Carla Boonkong reports from Bangkok.

Even with high infection levels, top officials are saying that incoming tourism will see a takeoff

Indications that the kingdom will drop entry restrictions after the Songkran holidays come to an end. The news is coming with an encouraging take off in entry numbers in response to previous moves to lighten the load on travellers. There is now every reason to believe that the kingdom’s critical and highly lucrative foreign tourism industry could turn into an economic bright spot for 2022 provided another Covid storm does not descend. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/04/13/incoming-tourism-take-off-with-easier-entry/ James Morris reports from Bangkok.

Defiant Thanathorn vows to prove his innocence after being charged with Lèse-majesté offence in Bangkok

The latest charges against Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, a key political activist and opponent of the government, have been anticipated for some time ever since the Prime Minister’s Office made known its particular displeasure with his media broadside in January 2021 with a police complaint filed in Bangkok. This came as the government struggled to launch its vaccination campaign last year. There are also fears that these charges may raise political tensions. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/04/12/gritty-thanathorn-denies-lese-majeste-charge-bangkok/ Carla Boonkong reports from Bangkok.

US sanctions on Russia part of a ‘profound’ geopolitical shift to Asia as US firms leave China

US President Biden’s key policy adviser for the Indo Pacific on the National Security Council has told an Asia Pacific summit organised by a Washington DC-based think tank that the US administration is still actively seeking an ASEAN summit in Washington where the leaders of the 10 member ASEAN bloc can meet the US president. He said it was something Washington wanted to see happen in the next month or so. It comes amid deepening divisions between the United States and China over the latter’s tacit support for Russia in its invasion of Ukraine and a determination by the United States to build a new and more secure foundation for security, economic and political development in Southeast Asia. It comes as a document obtained by the Associated Press (AP) shows that Russia planned to regard countries such as Thailand which abstained in last week’s highly embarrassing UN vote that saw it removed from the UN Human Rights Council as ‘unfriendly nations’. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/04/11/us-profound-geopolitical-shift-to-asia/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.

Fears growing that Covid may yet derail plans to reopen fully to foreign tourism from July 1st next

The news comes with rising foreign tourist arrivals from April reportedly up by 66% this week as the requirement for a pre-departure test and a certificate was abolished, as planned, on April 1st. This was Phase Two of a Four-Phase plan which has been thrown out of kilter by proposals from Bhumjaithai Party ministers this week which emphasised the retention of an antigen test on arrival for visitors after May 1st when all testing was scheduled to be removed. Despite Friday’s postponement, CCSA spokesman, Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin, did emphasise that there was a will to further ease restrictions on incoming travellers. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/04/08/fears-rise-for-free-foreign-tourism-access/ Carla Boonkong reports from Bangkok.

Stalled Chinese submarine shines light on Rolls Royce firm supplying engines to China’s military

The spotlight on Thailand’s submarine deal with China is also linked to the altered geopolitical environment after the Russian invasion of Ukraine with heightened sensitivity in the West, in particular in Germany, concerning the supply of critical engineering products to an expanding Chinese military. Officials with the Royal Thai Navy and representatives of the Chinese state-owned shipbuilding firm involved in the contract are to meet later in April with its potential cancellation threatening a severe blow to Thailand’s shift to China as a defence equipment supplier after the 2006 and 2014 coups in what is now a radically altered world. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/04/07/submarine-deal-raises-questions-about-china/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.
