Face masks back on as cabinet votes down end of mandate in June. Nightlife trade slams reopening

Nightlife business owner says his customers are not happy with seeing masseuses with face masks on while other operators slam the nervousness of the government and the restrictions on trade which they want to see liberalised even further than things were in 2020 to give their businesses a badly needed shot in the arm after two years of losses and debt. This comes as the economic recovery is showing signs of slowing again in 2022 while the foreign tourism industry is making a slower than expected comeback. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/31/face-masks-back-on-after-cabinet-decision/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.

June and July set to see fireworks in Thai politics with Thamanat poised to lead Setthakij Thai Party

Reports suggest that Captain Thamanat Prompow has had talks with the Pheu Thai Party and even with former premier Thaksin Shinawatra. It is suggested he is thinking beyond the current government which looks weakened from last weekend’s resounding election victory in Bangkok for the Pheu Thai Party, Move Forward Party and former Minister of Transport in the Yingluck Shinawatra government until 2014, Chadchart Sittipunt. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/29/fireworks-as-thamanat-poised-to-topple-pm/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.

Harrowing scenes on Wednesday night as a 34-year old American woman watched in horror as her newfound friend 26-year-old Camille Jeanne Gavaudan’s life drained away as she lay face down on the road after being hit by a car at a road intersection and zebra crossing. Mask mandate to be scrapped in Thailand from mid June in a boost for the foreign tourism sector

Visa Global Travel Plan Survey in recent weeks shows that 63% of foreign tourists come to Thailand seeking relaxation from modern life and particularly identified the country’s massage parlour industry, hospitality sector, restaurants and cultural attractions as key reasons for choosing to visit the kingdom. The scrapping of the face mask mandate from mid-June will be a very welcome development although some face mask requirements will remain until the disease is declared endemic which is now expected to happen by July 1st. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/25/face-mask-mandate-scrapped-from-mid-june/ James Morris reports from Bangkok.

Former Pheu Thai finance minister expresses unease about US regional moves to counter China’s rise

The statement raises a question about the Pheu Thai Party’s position as well as that of Thaksin Shinawatra towards efforts by the current US administration to take on China in the light of an unlikely alliance earlier in May between Red Shirt activist Jatuporn Promphan and royalist lawyer Nitithorn Lamlua when they protested at the US Embassy against US efforts to counter China in the Indo Pacific and Thailand’s declared engagement, revealed on Friday by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit, with the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), a new US economic pact with Asian countries which is to be unveiled in France next month. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/23/former-pheu-thai-finance-minister-concerned-at-us-china-rift/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.

Sunday’s Bangkok poll may mean the end for PM after the Palang Pracharat Party’s dismal showing

The poll on Sunday now makes the new voting laws due to be passed by parliament over the coming weeks even more urgent as it becomes clear that the path to power for the opposition parties may be open given the poor showing of the ruling Palang Pracharat Party which follows several electoral disappointments since the start of the year. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/24/bangkok-poll-may-signal-the-end-of-prayut/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.
