Former CSI Reveals What Crime Scenes Really Do to You | Selena’s Story

What does a career in crime scene investigation actually do to the person behind the badge? In this episode of Bloodstains & Breakthroughs, Christina Hester sits down with fellow former Crime Scene Investigator Selena for an unfiltered conversation about the reality of working scenes most people could never imagine. They talk about what first pulled Selena toward criminal justice, growing up fascinated by crime shows and forensic puzzles, what television gets completely wrong about crime scene investigation, and the emotional weight that comes with spending years surrounded by death, trauma, and some of the worst moments of other people’s lives. But this conversation goes deeper than the job. Selena opens up about the cases and experiences that stayed with her, the importance of remembering why you chose this career in the first place, and what it means to give a voice to someone who can no longer speak for themselves. Christina and Selena also get into the dark humor, coping mechanisms, misconceptions, lessons, and very human realities that exist behind crime scene tape. Because crime scene investigators aren't characters on television. They're people. And sometimes the scene follows you home. In this episode: • What inspired Selena to become a Crime Scene Investigator • What crime shows get wrong about real CSI work • The hardest parts of working crime scenes • Why some scenes never leave you • The advice Selena would give someone entering the field • Why remembering your “why” matters • Dark humor and coping in forensic careers • The human side of investigating death • What years of exposure to trauma can teach you about life Bloodstains & Breakthroughs is where crime scenes, trauma, survival, and what comes after collide. Hosted by former Crime Scene Investigator Christina Hester.

The Story America Missed: Officer Urban Rodriguez

The full story is finally here. Years ago, I encountered Officer Urban Rodriguez’s story from behind the crime scene tape as one of the investigators who responded to the scene. This time, I got to sit across from Urban and hear the part of the story that evidence could never tell. The trauma. The recovery. The setbacks. The strength required to keep moving forward when the headlines disappear but the consequences remain. This is the story America missed. Officer Urban Rodriguez’s full episode of Bloodstains & Breakthroughs is now available on YouTube and wherever you listen to podcasts. Temporada 1

Blind react to Crime Scenes

I’m finally sharing a look into my past as a crime scene investigator. For the first time, I’m revisiting some of the 124 cases I worked on. Due to my CPTSD, I’ve lost about 98% of my memories from that time, so these videos are a “blind reaction” as I rediscover my own work through old photos and reports. In this first episode, I’m walking through one of my first cases—a deceased elderly man found outside his home. I’ll explain the investigation process, the technical details we look for, and the reality of why we take the photos we do. The Case That Changed Me Forever Pt 3

Episode 3 of Bloodstains & Breakthroughs is officially out! This one is honest and vulnerable. I talk about rebuilding after trauma, learning who you are after survival, and what it really looks like to keep going when no one is watching. Full episode is live on TikTok and YouTube. Short clips will be shared here and on Instagram. Thank you to everyone who continues to support this journey.

The Case That Changed Me Pt 2

The Case That Changed Me Part 2 is not about the scene. It is about what followed me home. The case that changed me did not end when the tape came down. 👀 Watch on Youtube at Bloodstains and Breakthroughs

The Case That Changed Me Pt 1

First podcast episode energy: unfiltered, a little messy, and very real. This podcast isn’t a lecture. It’s me talking to you like a friend. The kind of friend who’s been through it, learned a few things, and isn’t pretending to have it all polished. We talk about growth, grief, grit, and the stuff people usually skip. And yes, there are bloopers at the end because perfection is overrated and laughter is part of the healing.
