A French soldier named Henry Barbusse published one of the first novels about WW1, Le Feu, under fire: the story of a squad. In his vivid recollections he wrote, “Two armies that fight each other is like one army committing suicide.” When we last left our hero, he had just been wounded & was on his way to wherever in the back of one of the ambulances he was supposed to be driving.
